“It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel
Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got in line for art, and I noticed that she still had not removed her hood. When we arrived at the art room, I said:...

Brewster Kahle's book archive →
“Brewster decided that he should keep a copy of every book they scan so that somewhere in the world there was at least one physical copy to represent the millions of digital copies. That safeguarded random book would become the type specimen of that work. If anyone ever wondered if the digital book’s text had become corrupted or altered, they could refer back to the physical...

Read: Become Someone Else
From Love
When one reads books, he/she starts living it and identifies (or not) with main hero. These print ads for the Mint Vinetu bookstore, which sells lots of classics, focuses on the idea of becoming someone else. And provokes people to try on different personas.
I absolutely love this ad campaign! Click the link to see more.

Cream of Tartar
Anran: I don't get "cream of" soups...what does that even mean?
Me: They're soups...with cream in them...
Anran: So cream of mushroom soup is mushroom soup with cream?
Me: Yes..
Anran: And cream of spinach is spinach soup with cream?.
Me: Yes.
Anran: THEN WHAT IS CREAM OF TARTAR.
Me: ....that's not a soup, that's the stuff you put in meringue to stabilize egg whites.
Anran: ..............oh.

Things have been pretty rough since one of our cats was diagnosed with chronic renal failure, so it's nice to have a good laugh.

Lois Lane, Girl Reporter
deantrippe:
Here are some notes and images from Lois Lane, Girl Reporter, a pitch for a series of illustrated young adult novels I worked on a few years ago for DC Comics. Story by me, with considerable brainstorming help from my pal John Campbell, and art by Project: Rooftop fan favorite Daniel Krall.
My wonderful editor, Chris Cerasi, was a real champion of the series, which we codenamed...

Things I tell my students, but then forget to heed...
Me: I feel like I’m holding tension in both hands…I’m trying to find ways to minimize tightness as much as possible, but I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong.
AB: Maybe you feel tired because the piece is new and your muscles aren’t familiar with the patterns…nothing looks visibly wrong, it’ll just take time before it feels easy.

Early Vday Dinner
I’ll be out of town for Valentine’s day, plus we’re taking a four-day trip to Chicago for our anniversary at the beginning of March, so we didn’t want to go anywhere fancy or do anything that special. But we do like excuses to make nice meals, so tonight we roasted a whole lake trout stuffed with mushrooms, rice and tomatoes and sprinkled with lemon and white wine. As...

Procrastination
I only have one paper left to finish up the semester, which means I’ve spent a chunk of the day looking at the following links instead!
- Their cake toppers! The ‘stache party favors! I could pretend that I’m looking at this for inspiration for my own wedding, but the fact is that I just really really love wedding photography in general.
- Cookie dough creations! I really...

In the past month...
- My fiance got hit by a car (he is fine). I am now too scared to ride my bike around town.
- I started regularly making my own bread and jam. It is so much more satisfying than grocery store bread and jam, and tastes better too.
- I started canning those jams, too.
- I ran a charity 5K and raised over $1000 for arts education.
- I bonded even more with my teacher’s kids.
- I got a...

We leave in the morning!
Me: See, there's totally still room in your car for more stuff!
Anran: Yeah but now I have no rear window visibility...
Me: Geez, look, you're moving your life 500 miles away in a car. Sometimes you don't have the luxury of looking back.
Anran: Never look back? That's very poetic.
Me: Always.

Packing for the move has been slightly complicated by our consignment store find of a cute dinner table + 4 chairs for $45. Had to have it! So affordable, and one of the last furniture pieces that we were still looking for (although Anran still needs a dresser). Between the dining set taking up all my car's space and the fact that Anran drives a 2-door car, it's taken a lot of tetris skill to fit all of our belongings. But as of tomorrow we're no longer a long-distance couple!
Catching up on the Internet
I’ve spent the past month at Garth Newel Music Festival, during which I had no cell phone and extremely limited internet access. This experience has only solidified the fact that I’m a total Luddite at heart, plus I just really believe that the best healing happens in the middle of nature, far far away from any sort of technology. Peace, quiet, music, and love! Hiding out in the...

The Heart that Makes the Home
Anran and I spent this past weekend in Ann Arbor doing a preliminary move of his things into my apartment. We cleaned like crazy, hit up as many garage and yard sales as possible, acquired tons of cheap furniture, rearranged my preexisting furniture, and turned my exroomie’s room into an office. I moved out of my home state of Maryland three years ago and I’ve lived in this apartment...
